Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed veins in the rectum or anus. They are similar to varicose veins and can cause discomfort, pain, and other symptoms, particularly when they are irritated or aggravated. Hemorrhoids can be internal or external, and are a common condition especially in adults over the age of 50, though they can occur at any stage.
